In short, Tanzania is one of the world’s most magical places. If you have visited Tanzania’s destinations once, you will never forget them. Every step you take inside the country will make you realize how fortunate you are to be visiting nature’s true wonder, Tanzania Safari Tours. Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most exotic national parks as well as natural wonders such as Mount Kilimanjaro. The country is Africa’s safari heart and home to some iconic adventures that are well decorated with a mix of dreamy beaches.
Most visitors come to see the country’s wilderness areas or volcanic peaks, and a few come specifically to soak up the sun on the beaches along the Indian Ocean. The country’s vibrant ethnic tribal communities are equally awestruck by these natural wonders. Their million-year-old tradition, lifestyle, and beliefs compete with the wilderness views that captivate the tourist’s senses. The cultural value is not inferior, with 120 different tribal groups and 125 different languages. Safaris and national parks, on the other hand, are Tanzania’s main draws.
Here are some breathtaking Tanzania destinations that should be on every traveler’s must-see list when visiting Tanzania for safari tours.
MOUNT KILIMANJARO
Kilimanjaro, at 19,340 feet, is Africa’s highest peak and the world’s largest free-standing mountain. A tropical montane forest rich in unique flora and fauna surrounds the base of this massive dormant volcano. Heath forest gives way to moorland dotted with giant senecio and lobilia higher up. A spectacular zone of rock and ice leads to the summit crater, where sulfur gas is still emitted from the ash pit. Uhuru Peak, the mountain’s true summit, is located just above the crater floor.
Climbing Kilimanjaro has grown in popularity in recent years. The Marangu (tourist) route has become particularly congested. In order to maintain the high quality of our experience, African Environments decided to discontinue use of the Marangu Route in 1995 and instead develop new routes on the spectacular western side of the mountain. Our western route clients not only enjoy a pristine wilderness experience, but they also ascend more gradually, allowing their bodies to acclimate to the extreme elevations more fully. The journey is far more pleasant, and it avoids many of the potentially fatal high-altitude medical problems associated with a shorter ascent.
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Serengeti is a Maasai word that means “wide open space.” This vast park has to be seen/ believed, both for the landscape and for one of the world’s largest mammal migrations. The Serengeti National Park is located in northern Tanzania, next to the smaller Maasai Mara Reserve in southern Kenya. Although the border between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara is closed to tourists, wildlife freely crosses it. The Serengeti National Park is a 6- to 8-hour drive from Arusha, with much of the journey on poor dirt roads during the heavy rain season. Most people choose to stop at Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara for the night. Flights to the Serengeti can also be arranged from Arusha via scheduled light aircraft or private charter. Although it is possible to spend weeks exploring the vast Serengeti, safaris in the park are typically 3–5 days long.
NGORONGORO CRATER
The Ngorongoro Crater was formed when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, leaving the world’s largest intact caldera (crater). The concentration and diversity of wildlife inside the 12-mile-diameter crater are probably greater than anywhere else in Africa. Clients who spend a day in the crater (accessible only by 4-wheel-drive vehicles) enjoy close-up wildlife viewing. There are no accommodations within the crater, but several outstanding lodges such as Ngorongoro Serena Lodge on the rim provide spectacular views and serve as excellent staging points for game drives into the crater. Campsites on the eastern slope of the Crater Wall also provide excellent access to wildlife.
The surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with the Crater as its focal point, is a stunning multi-use region nearly the size of the Serengeti. Forested mountains, rugged highlands, smaller volcanic craters, and vast plains offer spectacular vistas and game viewing with few other tourists. Unlike national parks, the conservation area is still inhabited by Maasai people, who live their traditional pastoral lifestyle in harmony with wildlife. Cool temperatures, opportunities to meet Maasai, and excellent hiking make this area ideal for our walking safaris.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Tarangire National Park, a 3 hour’s drive from Arusha, has 2600 square kilometers of pristine savanna wilderness. The park is well-known for its elephant population, which numbers in the thousands. During the dry season, the Tarangire River, which runs through the park, is the only source of water for wildlife in the ecosystem, and thousands of animals are drawn in. Although elephant viewing in Tarangire is excellent all year, a visit during the dry season can be an once-in-a-lifetime experience.
ZANZIBAR ISLAND
The famous spice island of Zanzibar is located just off the coast of mainland Tanzania. A rich blend of African, Arabic, and Indian cultures has given this location a distinct personality. The historic ‘Old Stone Town,’ with its tiny winding alleyways, beautifully decorated doors, colorful bazaars, mosques, and courtyards, reflects the island’s long and varied history. Many beautiful white-sand beaches surround the island, bordered by an azure sea teeming with colorful tropical fish and spectacular coral. Only a short flight from Arusha, Zanzibar is a welcome respite from the parks and mountains of Northern Tanzania, and it is an ideal place to rest and relax.
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
Lake Manyara National Park is located between Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley. The park covers an area of approximately 325 square kilometers, of which 230 square kilometers are occupied by the soda ash lake Manyara. The other surface contains a variety of habitats, such as the Rift Valley, highlands, and woodlands.
The tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara National Park are one of the best attraction in the park. Apart from South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Serengeti and Uganda’s Ishasha Southern Sector in Queen Elizabeth National Park, it is one of only four African National Parks with tree-climbing lions. The park is home to large herds of elephants, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, cheetahs, impalas, olive baboons, and a variety of Sykes monkeys. Through safari game drives, safari walks, and bird watching, Lake Manyara National Park provides exceptional wildlife experiences. Bird watching, indeed! It is home to over 400 bird species, including the thousands of pink flamingos that grace the shores of Lake Manyara.
NYERERE NATIONAL PARK
In southern Tanzania, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Africa’s largest protected area, encompassing more than 50,000 square kilometers of forests, grasslands, open woodlands, and mountains. This hidden gem, located approximately 219 kilometers from Dar es Salaam, provides visitors with unforgettable wildlife experiences. Furthermore, the reserve provides a variety of lodging options for all types of visitors.
Buffaloes, lions, giraffes, wildebeests, hippos, crocodiles, impalas, puku antelopes, sable antelopes, elands, waterbucks, hyenas, African wild dogs, bushbucks, Lichtenstein’s hartebeests, and zebras are among the wildlife species found in Nyerere National Park. Furthermore, the reserve is home to over 445 bird species, including migratory birds. Giant kingfishers, African fish eagles, bee-eaters, hornbills, turacos, African skimmers, and pelicans are among the birds. It is open to the public from June to October.
MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
The park, located in the Mahale Mountains, provides authentic safari experiences, especially if you dislike crowds. The park is located in Tanzania’s Kigoma region on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale National Park was established primarily to protect the region’s thousands of endangered chimpanzees. It is well-known for its stunning sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, among other things.
Mahale has a diverse range of habitats, including grasslands, alpine bamboo, woodlands, and montane rainforests, which are home to more than 50 wildlife species. Chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, red colobus monkeys, olive baboons, leopards, and antelopes are just a few examples. Mahale National Park visitors enjoy chimp trekking, forest walks, bird watching, hiking, and sport fishing. The best time to visit the park is between July and October, when the chimps congregate along the lakeshores in large groups.
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Ruaha National Park is the second Tanzania’s largest protected area, covering approximately 20,226 square kilometers. It is about 130 kilometers west of Iringa and is located in both central and southern Tanzania. It has a diverse eco-system that includes riverine and savannah grasslands dotted with baobab trees that provide spectacular scenery. It gets its name from the Great River Ruaha, which runs along the park’s southern edge. The River Ruaha provides thrilling game viewing, especially during the dry season when gazelles, waterbucks, impalas, and other animals congregate to drink water.
Meanwhile, predators like leopards, hyenas, jackals, crocodiles, and cheetahs can be seen waiting for prey. Furthermore, Ruaha is the best place in Tanzania to see endangered wild dogs. It is possible to visit the park at any time of year. However, birders should visit the park during the wet season, when migratory birds are present.
KATAVI NATIONAL PARK
This is a remote archaeological national park in Tanzania’s Katavi region. Katavi, despite being less visited and more difficult to reach, it provides very rewarding safari experiences. Predators such as lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, wild dogs, and jackals live there. In fact, predators are much more common in Katavi than other animals. Elephants, giraffes, cape buffaloes, zebras, reedbucks, sable antelopes, roan antelopes, and impalas are among the grazers that call this park home.
Katavi Park is named after a river, and it contains two seasonal lakes, Katavi and Chada, which are home to a variety of crocodiles and hippos. The park, however, has limited accommodations due to its remote location. Katavi Wildlife Camp, Mbali-Mbali Katavi Lodge, Simply Saadani Camp, and Bab’s Camp are among the lodges and camps. Nonetheless, the park is open all year, particularly from June to November, when the animals congregate around the scarce water sources.

CONCLUSION
Tanzania is a nation that consistently receives high praise. While the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro—three of Africa’s top five destinations—tend to get most of the attention, the less-traveled parks in the country’s south and west are well worth a trip, and safaris in the wildly diverse Selous, Ruaha, Mahale, or Katavi parks can be just as exciting, memorable, and more private.
