ARUSHA AIRPORT: HISTORY

Colonel Grey, a big farmer cultivating coffee and sorghum in the areas of Burka and Mateves, built Arusha airport in 1956. After Tanganyika’s independence in 1961, the airport was officially handled by the government.

 After the breakup of the East African community in 1977, the airport was handed over to an agricultural department called Kilimo Handler to run. The Tanzania Airports Authority was established in 1999 as an executive agency tasked with operating and managing all government airports and airstrips on Tanzania’s mainland.

The airport is managed by the airport manager, who also oversees and manages the Loliondo airstrip. Arusha Airport is classified as a code 3C airport by ICAO standards, Annex 14, Aerodrome Design Manual.

 After the completion of the runway extension project, the airport now has a runway of 1860 meters in length and 30 meters in width, with orientations of 09 and 27, PCN 15/F/B/Y/T, and turning pads at both ends.

 Arusha airport has five taxiways: taxiways A, B, C, D, and P (parallel taxiways), which connect the remote apron, runway 09, and taxiway A.”

ARUSHA AIRPORT HAS TWO (2) APRONS:

• The main apron area is 15,000 m2 in size and can accommodate three ATR 72 or Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft or 15 caravans (C208).
• (ii)Remote apron service, The 8,925 m2 parking area can accommodate fifteen (15) C208 aircraft weighing less than 12 tons.

 Arusha Airport has a departure facility that can handle 219 passengers at once.

OPERATION HOURS

Arusha Airport is open twelve (12) hours a day, from sun set to sun rise; it does not operate at night.

RESCUE AND FIRE FIGHT SERVICE (RFFS)
