One of the first things you will need to decide when organizing your safari to Tanzania is how you will get around the area. The pros and cons of both fly-in and drive-in safari options will be discussed as we examine them more closely. Without the hassle of making airline reservations, you can visit many well-known locations in Africa. You can travel quickly and easily by air to various regions thanks to Fly-In Safari. For instance, we can arrange a quick 50-minute flight for you to travel to the Serengeti North Ndutu Area if your hotel is in Arusha. From there, you can start an amazing African adventure that includes Wildlife safari exploration, or cultural tours.

You can travel between locations more quickly and take in more attractions to make the most of your vacation by using a light aircraft. A Serengeti fly-in safari will not only be convenient for you, but it will also give you sweeping views of the surroundings. Aerial views will also aid in your familiarization with the locations you explore on the ground. A fly-in safari not only offers the advantages of visiting more locations in less time, but it also ups the excitement factor of your tours.

FLIGHTS TO THE SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Even with the transfer and waiting time at the airport, taking a flight to the Serengeti is faster than driving there, cutting the travel time by 3 to 4 hours. It’s simple to book a flight to the Serengeti, but one should be aware that it departs and lands from the domestic Arusha airport. On request, however, some restricted connections may be made from Kilimanjaro International in Arusha, including charter flights. Auric Air Tanzania and Coastal Aviation have been the two primary airlines providing domestic flights linking the Serengeti and other tourist destinations to Arusha.

SCHEDULE AND COSTS OF FLIGHTS TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The same plane typically operates morning and afternoon flights, with each set of flights ending with a return trip to Arusha. The flight lasts an hour on average, but the actual time depends on how many intermediate stops, or “hops,” the plane will make as it lands to drop off or pick up passengers at various airports. The timing of an hour to the Serengeti is essentially fairly accurate because most flights try to make as few stops as possible.

Depending on the season and availability, a one-way flight from Arusha to Serengeti costs between US$ 200 and US$ 250 per person, while a return (two-way) flight could cost between US$ 300 and US$ 450 per person, including taxes. Airlines that offer Serengeti fly-in safaris includes:

  • Auric Air
  • Coastal Aviation
  • Air Tanzania
  • Air Excel
  • Regional Air
  • Tropical Air
  • Flightlink
  • Precision Air
  • Grumeti Air

WHY FLY-IN SERENGETI SAFARI: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FLYING TO SERENGETI

The main benefit of taking a flight from Arusha, Zanzibar, or Dar es Salaam to the Serengeti is that it saves time. This is especially useful for shorter safaris, such as overnight or two-night trips, since it takes an hour to fly versus five to six hours to drive. However, you must allow for a 45-minute reporting period and the 20- to 30-minute drive to the Arusha airport, so the time saved is actually closer to three hours. Second, because the road to the Serengeti is occasionally dusty and bumpy, travelers with back or medical conditions that could get worse on the road should only think about flying.

Cost is one of the drawbacks of Serengeti Fly-in Safari, particularly if there are more than two passengers in a group. Each passenger is only allowed to check in and carry 15 kilograms of luggage. Finally, even though it’s a long journey, going by car allows you to experience a country more authentically and offers a more exciting way to get where you’re going, which increases the likelihood that you’ll experience the wilderness.

 FLY-IN SAFARIS VS. DRIVE-IN SAFARIS

 Fly-in Safaris

Simply means using small aircraft to transport visitors between locations. Each national park has a number of small airstrips that serve the various camps and lodges there. In order to get visitors where they need to go, flights frequently make pit stops at lots of airstrips along the way. There are many aviation companies to choose from in Tanzania, and they offer fantastic scheduled routes that connect almost all of the national parks you might want to visit. If you select this option, the camp will operate on a game-package basis, which means that activities are included in the price and that the camp will plan its own activities and employ its own drivers and guides. Unless a guest has reserved and paid for a private vehicle, they will have to share these activities with other visitors.

Drive-in Safaris

It’s possible to drive from one park to another in just a few hours because many of Tanzania’s best wildlife areas are located close to one another. Driving gives you the chance to explore more of the nation and spend more time getting to know your tour guide, which frequently results in a safari that is more specifically catered to your needs. If you decide to travel overland, you will have your own private vehicle and guide when you arrive at each location. You will also be provided with full board at the camps because all game drives will be conducted with your driver guide. Additional excursions like game walks, fly-camping, night drives, community visits Ballooning and boating will cost extra and typically require advance reservations.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING BETWEEN A FLYING AND DRIVING SAFARI:

Is there a cost differential between the two options?

This will depend on how many passengers are taking the trip. The price for the car and the guide is the same whether there are one person or seven. Therefore, the value of the car increases as the number of passengers increases. Select Adventure Safari has both five-seater and seven-seater vehicles available, and we typically find that driving is more affordable than flying for groups of four to seven people. In contrast, even for relatively short distances, flying is typically more affordable for smaller groups of one to three people.

How many days do you have on safari?

Flying is frequently the best option if you only have a short amount of time to spend on a Tanzania safari. On the other hand, if you have a few weeks to devote to your safari, you might decide to travel more slowly by car, stopping at various locations along the way to see more of the country outside the parks.

How much luggage can you bring?

The maximum baggage allowance for light aircraft is 15 kg (33 lbs) per person, including hand luggage. Additionally, solid-sided cases are not allowed because soft-sided bags are required to fit in the hold. Depending on how many passengers you have, you do not have the same strict restrictions when driving your own car.

Are you scared of flying?

There is no way around the fact that you will need to take a plane to get to Africa, but some people find that international flights are more comfortable than light flights. The seating capacity of East African small planes ranges from six to twelve passengers. Due to their size, the pilot and cockpit are clearly visible, and even the smallest movement or bump can be felt. It’s always worth letting your agent or safari consultant know if you’re afraid of flying before you book. All of this, combined with the remote and frequently bumpy bush airstrips, can be enough to dissuade someone with a fear of flying. However, most people find that flying in a small plane is thrilling and can significantly enhance their overall experience.

Open-sided vs. closed-sided vehicles: do you have a strong preference?

All of your game viewing will take place from a closed vehicle if you opt for a drive-in safari. If your clients opt for a fly-in safari, it’s likely that they will view wildlife from an open vehicle parked at your lodging (the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the exception, where all vehicles must be closed). The safari experience does vary slightly depending on whether the vehicle has open or closed sides.

CONSIDER A COMBINATION.

It’s worth mixing it up and offering both flying and driving, as with many other aspects of a safari, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. For instance, in northern Tanzania, a great compromise would be to travel by private guide and vehicle between Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater before taking a flight into the Serengeti to continue your safari. The northern Serengeti is too far to drive from the Crater in a single day, so this is necessary if visitors intend to visit there. In order to save time, you can also choose to drive one way and then fly back. However, keep in mind that this option is not always the most economical because the driver and vehicle will still need to return to Arusha even if you don’t join them.
