This once-in-a-lifetime 7 Days Tanzania safaris includes three full days in the Serengeti, giving you plenty of time to explore this incredible landscape. You will also visit two of Tanzania’s most popular national parks: Ngorongoro and Olduvai Gorge, where you will have the best chance of seeing the ‘Big Five’. Tarangire is a must-see for birders and elephant enthusiasts alike. Lake Manyara is home to a large number of baboons as well as the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. A DETAILED ITINERARY: 7 DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI

DAY 00: ARRIVAL DAY

You will be responsible for arranging their own flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). We will arrange a private transfer from JRO to your Arusha hotel. You will meet your local Select Adventure representative that night or early the next morning for a full briefing.

DAY 1: ARUSHA-LAKE MANYARA

Your private guide and vehicle will meet you and drive you to Lake Manyara, arriving in plenty of time for an afternoon game drive. Lake Manyara National Park, located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment on the edge of the Rift Valley, is famous for its large alkaline soda lake, which is home to the pink flamingo, yellow-billed stork, and heron. If you’re lucky, you might get to see the tree-climbing lions, which are only found in this park together with Serengeti and Queen Elizabeth in Uganda. Keep an eye out for some amusing antics from the local baboon population; Lake Manyara is thought to have the most of these primates in the world!

DAY 2: TRANSFER TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK WITH STOP OVER AT  OLDUVAI GORGE

After breakfast, you will pack a picnic lunch and continue to the Serengeti, a four-and-a-half-hour drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Your journey will take you to the Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakey’s discovered the hominoid remains of an Australopithecus boisei skeleton 1.8 million years old, one of the distinct links in the human evolutionary chain. The Leakey’s and their international team of archaeologists discovered the ruins of at least three distinct hominoid species, as well as a complete series of hominoid footprints estimated to be over 3.7 million years old, in a small canyon just north of the Ngorongoro Crater. The area is one of the world’s oldest sites of hominoid habitation, according to evacuated fossils. You will also see the shifting sand near the oldupai gorge, thereafter continue into the Serengeti, stopping for game viewing along the way.

DAY 03: FULL DAY SERENGETI

After breakfast, you will embark on a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch. The Serengeti National Park is one of the world’s best game reserves. It is Tanzania’s oldest game reserve, meaning “endless plains” in Maasai, and is famous for its role in the annual Great Migration, when an estimated two million herbivores, mostly wildebeest and zebra, migrate from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

DAY 04: FULL DAY SERENGETI

You will depart at your leisure from the safari camp for another full day of game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. The migrating herds will congregate in the western corridor during June, preparing to cross the Grumeti River. Even when the migration is not active, the Serengeti provides some of the most exciting game viewing in the world, with large herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, and thousands of eland, topi, hartebeest, impala, and Grant’s gazelle.

DAY 05: FULL DAY SERENGETI

Your third day will be spent exploring this incredible park, which has the richest grazing grounds on the continent. In addition to the vast migratory herds, the Serengeti has incredible concentrations of predators, including huge lion prides, great leopard sightings, and high cheetah numbers.

DAY 06: TRANSFER TO  NGORONGORO CRATER

After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s fascinating wildlife arena. The crater is over 260 km2 (100 miles2) in size and was formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago. It is now the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and is often referred to as “Africa’s Eden.” With over 25,000 large mammals, it is not uncommon to see all five of the ‘Big Five’ (buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion, and leopard) on the same day. Driving through the Ngorongoro Highlands, you will arrive at the crater rim and then descend 610m (2000 feet) to begin your safari adventure.

Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

DAY 07: EXIT NGORONOGORO AND TRANSFER TO  TARANGIRE AND LATER  TO ARUSHA

Early morning Breakfast and later head to Tarangire National park , The Tarangire River flows through the park, attracting a large number of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and antelope, especially during the dry season, which lasts from June to October. Large herds of elephants can be seen roaming through Tarangire’s savannah grasses or resting under the strange-looking “upside down trees” (baobab) that dot the park. This park is also a “must see” for birdwatchers, as it is home to over 550 different bird species, the most diverse in Africa, including the Kori Bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird! Following a Tarangire morning game drive, you will begin your journey back to your Arusha hotel or to Kilimanjaro Airport.

7-DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI: TRIP INFORMATION

DIFFICULTY

Although going on safari is not physically demanding, it can be extremely exhausting. You will spend a lot of time inside your safari vehicle, the weather will be hot, and you will need to get up very early in the morning to have the best chance of seeing the big game. You don’t need to be in great shape, but you should be prepared for some long, hot days on the road.

FOOD AND DRINK

Full board is available at all safari lodges. Any additional drinks purchased are your responsibility and must be settled when you check out of the lodge. If you are driving during the day, your driver will bring you a packed lunch. Any dietary needs noted on your climb participation agreement will be passed on to the safari team, but please let your safari guide know if you have any additional needs. Your Arusha hotel is booked on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Upon arrival, you can purchase a meal or snacks from the hotel, which are payable in Tanzanian shillings or US dollars.

ACCOMMODATION

At carefully selected safari lodges, guests can stay in twin or double rooms. The lodges we use are all in beautiful settings and offer delicious meals and spacious bedrooms. Please keep in mind that Tanzania is still a third-world country with frequent power and water outages, and we cannot guarantee that all hotels and lodges will have hot showers at all times. The hotel will assist to the best of their ability, but these outages are beyond their control.

TRANSPORT

You will be traveling in one of Select Adventure’ comfortable safari vehicles. Each 4×4 vehicle has a “pop-top” roof that allows for great views of the amazing wildlife.

The three national parks—Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro—appear to be close on a map, but there is a significant amount of driving between them. The following are approximate driving times: While this allows you to see more of Tanzania’s countryside—look for Maasai villages alongside the road, children tending their goat and cattle herds, and road-side markets—you will not see any game during these transit times.

  • Moshi to Lake Manyara: 4 hours
  • Arusha to Tarangire: 2.5 hours
  • Tarangire to Ngorongoro: 3 hours
  • Ngorongoro to Serengeti: 4 hours
  • Lake Manyara to Serengeti: 5 hours

LUGGAGE

Your luggage can be transported in your safari vehicle and stored at your lodging. Please keep all cash, passports, and valuables on you at all times.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Travelers from the United Kingdom or the United States should fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). KLM flies to JRO from all major UK airports as well as many major US international airports. UK flights typically depart early in the morning, transfer at Amsterdam’s main airport, Luchthaven Schiphol, and arrive at JRO late that evening.

All of our safaris begin in the town of Arusha. Arusha is only 50 kilometers by road from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and as part of your safari, we will arrange transportation from the airport to your hotel. Transport is generally available at all times, including late at night and early in the morning, and takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

ON ARRIVAL

Our Select Adventure Safari team will meet you at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer you to your hotel. Look for your name board as you pass through the arrivals doors, which will be held by one of our safari guides.

BUDGET AND CHANGE

Because the Tanzanian shilling is a closed currency, you will not be able to purchase it before arriving. It is best to bring US dollars with you because they are widely accepted. It is critical that US bills be new (no more than ten years old), crisp, and undamaged. We can take you to an ATM or bank if you need some local currency to buy snacks or drinks at your hotel or on the way to the climb. There is also a currency exchange as you pass through the airport to the baggage collection area.

If you rely on a credit or debit card for emergency funds, notify your card issuer that you will be using it abroad, or it may not work when you really need it. Please keep in mind that not all hotels accept credit cards, so you may need to use an ATM to access funds.

TIPS

We understand that tipping is not a common practice in all countries, but it is in Tanzania. We recommend a tip of US$15–30 per day for your safari guide (per group, not per person). Many safari lodges use a shared tip system, with a box in the reception area where you can leave a tip for all staff. Check the information packs in your room because some lodges expressly state that you should not tip individual staff members. Tips are always optional, and you are not required to pay them if you are dissatisfied with the service you have received.
